About the Watch
The Nautilus collection originated from the creative mind of the late Gérald Genta. Notably, Genta sketched its design in just five minutes while dining in close proximity to Patek Philippe executives. In contrast to the conventional discreet luxury watches, exemplified by shiny objects peeking from shirt cuffs, both the Nautilus and the Royal Oak defied norms. Their large matte cases, featuring pronounced bezels with subtle shine on polished bevels, deviated from the traditional aesthetic. The Nautilus, drawing inspiration from hermetically sealed portholes on transatlantic ocean liners, showcased a rounded octagonal shape. This stood in contrast to the Royal Oak's eight-sided octagonal bezel, inspired by deep-sea dive helmets.
The iconic 5711 reference has defined the Nautilus collection since 2006. The current model, introduced in 2014, is an upgraded version with a thicker case to accommodate its dual-time and chronograph functions. Known as the Patek Philippe Nautilus Travel Time 5990/1r-001, it swaps the signature steel bracelet and case for a rose gold finish while boating a dark blue dial. It houses the self-winding Caliber CH 28-520 C FUS movement, which seamlessly integrates three practical and user-friendly complications: a flyback chronograph, a Travel Time function with dual time zones (featuring a skeletonized hand for home time), and an analog date display at 12 o’clock, synchronized with local time.
