About the Watch
The 5711 is often dismissed as boring, not just for its lack of complications. Back in the late ’90s, Patek Philippe introduced their first lightly complicated Nautilus, the 3710. When the Anniversary line launched in 2006, most of the attention went to the chronograph reference 5980, leaving the 5712 somewhat in the shadows. This might have been because Patek had already surprised collectors the year before with the 3712, a model that shared similar complications and aesthetics. But while the 5712 may look like a continuation, the differences are far more significant than they first appear.
The 3712 and 5712 are both slightly larger than the 5711, but the real distinction lies in their construction. The 3712 features a two-piece Monobloc case, a throwback to the original 3700 but with the addition of a crystal caseback. By contrast, the 5712 uses a more cost-effective case design, which became the standard for all subsequent Nautilus models. This difference isn’t obvious unless you take the watches apart, but the 5712’s caseback has a noticeable facet, unlike the seamless design of the 3712.
From the front, the differences are subtle but telling. The side “ears” of the case, straight on the 3712, were curved starting with the 5712. The crown on the 3712 is also smaller, with a distinct profile and no screw-down mechanism.
The most striking variations, however, are found on the dial. Both models feature the iconic gradient blue face with horizontal grooves, but the details set them apart. On the 3712, the power reserve indicator has three red dots on early models, later updated to four as seen on the 5712. The sub-dial beneath the power reserve is smaller on the 3712, leaving room for a marker at 7 o’clock. The baton at 6 is sharper, unlike the rounded version on the 5712. To improve legibility, the 5712 uses larger date numerals, inverted numbers from 9 to 23, and thicker hour and minute hands.
What truly elevates the 3712 is its moon phase. Where the 5712 uses a simple printed disc, the 3712 features a lacquered finish with raised stars, creating a sense of depth and sophistication.
Often considered an "ugly duckling" due to its unconventional layout, the 3712 rewards closer inspection. Its rarity, historical significance, and superior craftsmanship—especially in the moon phase—set it apart from its siblings. The example we have here, complete and in pristine condition, was sold in 2006 and features the rare “3 Dots dial,” making it a remarkable find for any collector.
